Given the limited space the vertical elements, in the form of the backdrop and the upright trees harmonizes the entire horizontal space in providing much of the visual interest for the garden. The crisp, sharp angles are balanced by flowing curves within the hardscape as well as the backdrop. A variety of plant material softens the hard landscaping elements to add vibrancy to the space. A natural stone bubble rock adds the soothing yet refreshing element of water to this garden.
The garden’s pre-built backdrop, of horizontal and vertical stained cedar boards and brightly painted hardboard with sweeping curves, is inset with painted PVC pipes – some open and some with flowers to create a vertical planting feature – a living wall. Painted PVC pipes are cut to various lengths and clustered in a flowing line showcasing a variety of flowering perennials in the dry river-wash stone bed. The bubble rock water feature at head of horizontal riverbed is accentuated with landscape lighting. The garden is finished with a high bar style bistro set to allow relaxation and revitalization as spring ‘Burst Forth’.
The Artist Garden presented by The Canadian Tulip Festival
In 1945, the Dutch royal family gifted thousands of tulip bulbs to Ottawa in gratitude for Canadians having sheltered Queen Juliana and her daughters for the preceding three years due to the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands during World War II. The arrival of the gift of tulips generated great interest, curiosity and admiration among Canadians and the magnificent display of tulips quickly became a treasured tourist attraction in the Nation’s Capital. It is a celebration of the arrival of spring as well as a commemoration of the significance of the tulip and its wartime connection in Canada. The festival has grown each year to become the largest of its kind in the world, attracting over 600,000 visitors annually.

Modern Oasis by Permacon and Davis Landscape
Designed with clean lines and low maintenance in mind, this multifunctional front yard is an example of the beautiful spaces that can be created for today's small properties.
The largest element is a parking space that doubles as a patio, while also being a permeable surface with an infiltration swale to collect storm water and allow it to filter naturally back into the water table.
Raised planters provide plenty of soil depth for trees to mature and provide shade and shelter and mass plantings of perennials and sedum matt ground covers provide low maintenance colour. Reinventing the front yard as a beautiful, functional and social space for beautiful, functional and social communities.

Garden description :
This garden design was created by and named after the Horticultural Industries Class of 2015, as part of a term project for a group of fourth semester landscape design students. A design competition was held, presentations were given, and selections were made by their peers and several faculty members. The final result is a combination of different highlights from several designs that have merged to create a thoughtful yet fun space. The Garden has been constructed by the second semester Landscape Construction class as a class project under the supervision of several faculty. The project was constructed using mostly locally purchased and/or donated product.

Our garden, entitled Spring in the Upper Valley, reflects a contemporary approach to an Ottawa garden in the early spring. The strong, clean lines of the pathways and raised garden beds, themselves built of pavers and metalled containers, are balanced with the traditional elements of Canada in the spring – flowing water finally free of winter’s grip, the dappled foliage of newly-awakening trees and bursts of colour showing bravely against sunlit skies.
